Artist statement / bio
Zhaoyu Wang (b. 1996, Xi’an, China) is a photographer, stylist, and creative director based in Toronto. She was originally trained in stomatology and economics before pursuing studies in fashion design in London. This interdisciplinary background informs a distinctly analytical approach to image-making, bridging rational structure and visual narrative. Her work is characterized by a calm, declarative visual language that treats photography as a method of observation rather than spectacle, examining the relationship between individuals, space, and perception. Having lived and worked across different regions, Wang is particularly attentive to the influence of geography and environment, often exploring how individuals inhabit and are shaped by specific social and spatial contexts.
Wang regards photography as a descriptive medium whose two-dimensional surface records a fragment of three-dimensional space. This fragment mirrors the condition of objects within four-dimensional reality, where matter and time coexist only momentarily. The act of photographing is instantaneous, yet images accumulate across time, forming a perceptual field that sits between the flatness of the photograph and the temporal continuity of lived experience. In this sense, the photographic image is never neutral but constructed; every narrative within it reflects the subjectivity of the gaze.
In her fashion-related work, Wang situates clothing within the conditions of everyday life. Emphasizing the personal dimension of style, she works with the individuality of her subjects rather than imposing uniform aesthetics. Real environments and fragments of daily experience become the stage on which garments appear with quiet yet unconventional tension, allowing fashion to emerge not as spectacle but as an extension of personal presence.
Her photographic projects span documentary, fine art, and editorial practices. Her work has been published in magazines including Selin, Mob Journal, and Enzomnia. Wang is also a member of the creative team at 11MAKE Vision, where she works as a creative director and stylist, responsible for developing the brand’s visual identity and media content.
OUT OF ORDER
Out of Order is a photographic exploration of controlled disruption. Aware of the gaze, it resists alignment. Posture tilts. Tension replaces ease. Nothing corrects itself. Within vacant interiors, garments detach from function and stand autonomous—no permission, no apology. A composed disturbance persists: order is not broken, only withheld.

YAOCHENG
This body of work emerged from an encounter between two women navigating displacement in a new city. During her first months in Toronto, Zhaoyu Wang met Yaocheng Xia, a medical student whose quiet demeanor holds an unexpectedly vivid inner world. Yaocheng had never stood before the camera as a model, nor had she been trained in how to compose herself under the gaze.
Her relationship to clothing does not operate through display. As a devoted vintage enthusiast, she approaches garments as carriers of memory and time — a private structure rather than an outward declaration. In a city still unfamiliar to them both, conversations around dress became a subtle point of alignment. Yaocheng also participated in styling, turning the act of dressing into a collaborative process rather than a unilateral construction.
The series situates her within the everyday spaces she inhabits — streets crossed without notice, corners briefly occupied, interiors softened by repetition. Styled yet non-performative, her presence unsettles the distinction between the ordinary and the aesthetic. Fashion here withdraws from spectacle; it does not insist on visibility, but lingers as an interior condition.
